"Clockwork Manor"

A house attraction located at Mechanika: A Steampunk Theme Park

Because the Steampunk concept is generally linked with video games, it has inspired me to retain that distinct role of the Steampunk concept. However, I've noticed that the official games released with this premise are most often limited to story-driven games or quest games, where the primary objective to finish the game is by advancing the story through interactions that will complete missions (Bioshock, Machinarium, Dishonored, etc.).

As a result of this observation, I came across the idea of utilizing a different video game genre where the Steampunk concept does not come into play: a LIFE SIMULATION, specifically, on the SIMS 4. The main purpose of this was instead of Steampunk being just the setting of a story-driven game, individuals can genuinely feel like they are actually in this fictional civilization upon playing.

The PESTLE analysis of the era from which we got this inspired 19th century industrial steam-powered era has helped me recognize that my concept should not be solely for aesthetic sake, but to also defy the reality of the Victorian Era. An aspect of the PESTLE that I incorporated into my game was the Environmental part, in which industrial wastes such as smogs or steams have such negative effect on the environment; thus, I incorporated this by putting on withered plants and trees to represent the consequence that Steampunk technology was efficient on anything but environmentally friendly.

And, because we focused on the Victorian Era in our PESTLE, I took the definite decision to develop a Victorian-inspired Steampunk house concept in my final output. This is evident as the structure of my project is largely built of Victorian architecture (Gothic revival dollhouse-like, and asymmetrical architectural design) rather than the walls, doors, and roofs are metallic and futuristic like the Steampunk architecture.

Mechanical gears and accessories such as GOGGLES, SPECTACLES, and MONOCLES for the Eyewear; Striped themed tuxedos, layered clothes, long skirts, and corsets for the body; top hats, wristwatches and shoes made of leather completes the blend of Modernistic Victorian look.

These 3 characters can be seen wearing Steampunk-inspired clothing. This is evident as their garments and accessories include the expected brown, copper, gold, and rust in Steampunk fashion.

I N S P I R A T I O N

I was heavily inspired by the words of Tim Fendley, a founder and creative director of Design Consultancy, on a Monocle on Design episode titled Extra: Finding a Way. He advised that whenever we produce a design, we practice how to keep the audience engaged with our work. And in terms of my creation, incorporating the unique features of a Steampunk concept as objects of my house would lead the audience to presume that this is how houses should look in this fictional concept.

He also added that we should use the concept of creating a spectacular but thought-provoking project or setting for an audience that are not exposed to such events on a regular basis. This contributes significantly to the reason why I purposefully included over elements of Steampunk on my structure, as I aim for the purpose of this creation besides appreciation was for these elements to drive the audience into a thought-provoking situation. --- wherein, certain questions may be produced such as "Is it really this full of innovations during this era?" or may even prompt the thought of why I placed these certain elements over another, like the main structure of the house placed on a rock, or the significance of withered plants and trees, why are there remnants of these elements, and so on.
